We had a good turnout for the vintage rifle match, theme was sniper rifles. We were well represented by 3 PU snipers, one swede AG41B and one real live 1903A4. Congrats to the top 4 shooters! Everyone shot really well and scores were really close. All of the PU shooters struggled with head position becuase the scope is so darn high and was hard to get even a chin weld on the stock, and the bolt is so far forward you have to break position to load a new round. Ted managed to come in the top four even though he wasn't shooting with a scope. Offhand is tough with magnification! Just two more matches to go for the season, see you next week for the rifle/pistol match.

This is a blog for information relating to Vintage Military Rifle and Pistol competions run in Sherwood, Oregon. This discipline combines all of collecting, fixing and understanding the designs of old weapons, custom reloading/bullet casting, and marksmanship. Many of these old rifles have simplistic sights and force you to take detailed notes of positions, sight picture and aiming point since you can't just dial in a simple 6 oclock hold.

Small turnout this month due to vacation and national matches attendance but was still great weather and fun. Bob shot a respectable score with his carbine even though his sight was loose and he had two misses, he had a great V count.

July 2014 rifle/pistol match results
We had a beautiful day with lots of shooters and some great scores. Eric brought out a nice Gew 98 all matching and shot a respectible score, and Allen H shot a really nice score as well. I got a chance to finally shoot my last two M-39 finns, a sako 1942 in a straight stock and a 1943 SKY, and both shot really well. I have to give Ed credit for shooting his sharps, he got really tired of olding up that lead pipe in offhand..... Pistol match had a great turnout as well. Matthew shot a much improved score for his second match. Allen and Eric were neck and neck with my former victory models and had really nice scores. Congrats to the top 50%. 4th saturday match theme is Korea/Vietnam, so anything the beligerents would have been using that was issue to general troops would be ok, mosins, sks, AK, garand, carbine, AR-15A1 or SP1, M14 etc...as long as it is not a match rifle, etc.

Rifle of the month was "Allies" and was represented mainly by M1 Garand's and one mosin and a SMLE. Scores were pretty tight this month with Bob taking the high score honors and the rest of us bunched up behind. Alen Flanagan would have gladly traded a few of his V's for some more points, he said:) Next match will be Saturday the 4th and will be the 40 shot rifle and pistol match, hope to see you there and congrats to the top 50% today!

June 2014 Military Rifle-Pistol Match Results
Beautiful day of shooting today. A mix of rifles today, springfields, M1's and a finn, argentine and a Romy G ak with donkey D**ck forend. Scores were pretty close today. Curtis shot a great score with my former FR-8 rifle. Allen suggested in September since I will be gone they might do a rifle of the month theme called "Rifles Frank has sold to us"....we'll see:) Pistol was well attended and people liked the action range a bit better. Olivia shot an excellent score with her VZ-61 to win the match beating the "old man" for the first time. I had some issues with some new bullets in my luger keyholing at 21 yards, so had four misses in the shoulder area because of that. Allen was close behind followed by Steve.

We had a nice turnout and pleasant weather. Rifle of the month was "Foreign Semi-Auto" but some people got mixed up so we only had two shooters with the ROM, a VZ-52 and a Hakim. Prizes this month were vhs tapes on highpower shooting, sniping and carlos hathcock. Tim shot a great score with a high V count to just eak past me for the top slot. Bob and Allen also had high V counts. Congrats to those who placed!

We had a nice turnout today. We installed new number boards and had the first bullet holes put into them by a new shooter:) The are nice and make it easier to find your target although I think we actually had more crossfires than normal:)
Welcome to Will our new shooter trying his hand with an M1 carbine. Jeffrey brought a neat tanker type 16" garand that barked pretty loud. Steve shot one of his best offhand scores in a long time. It was great to see Dean back again after his knee replacement. Niko shot his best prone score yet with his first bullets he cast and loaded himself!
Scores were pretty close. Congrats to the top 50%! I was trying out my new 1909 Peruvian mauser and my 1891/1912 Peruvian mauser, and shot the same score with both!
In pistol we also had some good scores with Steve also shooting a personal best with his new SAA and Bob also shooting his personal best with his M&P.

April 2014 Vintage Military Rifle Match Results
We had nice weather today, and some new and old faces. Welcome to Andy and welcom back to Art. Rifle of the month was "Cold War Soviet" and was represented by 5 sks rifles, three 1950's russian and two yugo 59/66's. I shot my russian sks and then my Yugo sks, interestingly they shot almost the exact same score. I've slugged them both and they both slug .312, I've been playing with some 150 SST .312 bullets with 5744 powder, and the russian shot a 99-5V which is pretty outstanding for an sks. Since those are longer than mag length I used yugo ball for the rapids. Congrats to Bob with a great score and the match winner. It was great to see all the sks's on the line.

It was cold and rainy, but we had a great turnout with 12 folks. Congrats to all those who placed. We had some good scores today, with Eric S shooting a new record score for the rifle match with a 199-17V using his cmp special grade rifle, and winning one of the last superbowl club rings. Previous record was 198-13V. Scores were really tight in the top six. Pistol scores were great as well. We had a nice mix of weapons this month in both rifle and pistol, from rolling blocks to persian mausers, and Lahti pistol to Vz-61. We had some new faces today, welcome, hope to see you back again. Curtis was trying out his new FR-8 and had fun. Prizes this month are swiss shooting medals and they were well received.

2007-2013 Scores for Vintage Rifle/Pistol/Garand matches
The 5V match concept started in 2006 when Brian Vendewettering(distinguished rifleman and presidents 100) had an idea to shoot the older military weapons on the 1950's era 5V targets that we had a lot of. The original match followed an 80 shot format at 200/300 and 600 yards. The prize was a Mosin 91/30 rifle. I won that first match with a smith corona 1903A3 and got the bug for these old rifles. Only two matches were held. In 2007, I started running M1 rifle clinics, as an intro to highpower shooting, but because the AR-15 is so dominant, people were reluctant to come shoot a match with one. Because we had a good supply of inexpensive club ammo and 11 club M1 rifles that were not being used, I developed an 80 shot 200 yard match using those same 5V targets just for these club M1 rifles. This gave a level playing field and encouraged participation. Rifles were issued randomly, you had to sight in and get used to the trigger pull quickly and then shoot the match. Eventually people started buying and wanting to shoot their own M1 rifles and then other vintage military rifles.
Things have changed a bit over the years in both format and awards schedule, mostly to encourage participation and align with the changing interests of the participants. The match used to be shot with just club issued M1 garands, then it became any M1 Garand. Awards for the top 50% with gold, silver and bronze CMP pins. Eventually it became a match with both bolt and semi-auto(M1) classes. I also started a rifle of the month(ROM) theme to encourage shooting something different each match. The ROM is optional. The top 3 ROM places are generally noted. After it became apparent that there was no advantage/disadvantage to shooting semi versus bolt, we changed to just a single class. In 2010 I started a 40 shot match which has just slow fire stages, to allow folks with single shot military rifles to participate. In late 2013 I added a vintage military pistol match after the rifle match.
In some cases shooters were using a non club m1, match, or non vintage rifle and in those cases the scores are reported but they were not included for awards.
